Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos will create a sculpture for Toronto’s waterfront, to be presented in 2027, the Canadian organization Lassonde Art Trail announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Lassonde Art Trail, which intends to create a four-kilometre public path in Toronto from 2026 onwards, revealed that “Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, recently named winner of Lassonde Art Trail’s Destination Artwork competition, will present ‘Artemisa’, a new permanent installation for Toronto’s waterfront scheduled for 2027.”

Organization has sent additional details closer to the date

The objective of this “Art Trail”, which was born from a donation from businessman and philanthropist Pierre Lassonde, is to have the first season in the summer of 2026 as a “dynamic public art experience offering a program of striking artworks”whether permanent or rotating, open throughout the year and completely free.

The project is part of the broader development on the front of Toronto facing Lake Ontario, which “aims to divert the mouth of the Don River and build flood protections for downtown Toronto.”

For the launch season, in the summer, the Lassonde Art Trail will feature works – result of orders or loans – Doctors of Kimica Kimica Kimica, Alexander Arreches, Careline Monnet is & the Baldwine, Hamillso, Kentin Monkman, Lisa Himer, Nada Belerique.

She was the first female artist to present her work at the Palace of Versailles

Joana Vasconcelos, born in 1971, has a career spanning more than three decades, which is characterized by the decontextualization of everyday objects and the appropriation of traditional crafts, which it adapts to the 21st century to question themes such as the role of women, consumer society and cultural identity.

Vasconcelos officially represented Portugal at the Venice Art Biennale in 2013, taking a cacilheiro transformed into a work of art to the main venue of the contemporary international exhibition.

She was the first female artist and the youngest creator to present her work at the Palace of Versailles, in a solo show, and has taken her production to institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain), the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi Galleries (Florence, Italy), among others.
