Denis Shapovalov’s career
Denis Shapovalov was born on April 15, 1999, in Tel Aviv, Israel. The athlete moved to Canada as a baby, where he began his sports training. Encouraged by his mother, Tessa Shapovalova, a former professional tennis player and coach, Denis started playing at an early age and quickly excelled.
With a powerful backhand, Shapovalov became known for his offensive play and his ability to take risks in decisive moments. While still a teenager, he won the Wimbledon youth title in 2016, a result that promoted him internationally and paved the way for his transition to the ATP professional circuit.
Denis Shapovalov’s explosion occurred in 2017, when, at the age of 18, he surprised the tennis world by beating the then number 2 in the world ranking, Rafael Nadal, at the Masters 1000 in Montreal. In that historic campaign, he reached the semifinals of the tournament and became the youngest tennis player to achieve this feat in a Masters 1000 since 2004.
In the same year, he entered the Top 50 of the ATP rankings for the first time. In the following years, Shapovalov accumulated prominent appearances in major tournaments, including quarterfinals and semifinals in Grand Slams and Masters 1000, as well as important titles on the ATP circuit. The first trophy came in Stockholm, in 2019.
In addition to his individual performance, Shapovalov also stood out representing Canada in team competitions. He was instrumental in the campaign that took the country to the 2019 Davis Cup final, alongside Félix Auger-Aliassime, and participated in winning the title in 2022.
