The minister () is different. It’s been a while and it was just before the rich versus poor wave. The change occurred on the occasion of the call, when it was said that criticism of the government was equivalent to attacks on democracy.
At first, the inflection of the speech in the mouth of the hitherto minister who stuck to Finance issues in a, let’s say, technical way, without letting himself be carried away by political/electoral emotions, sounded a little strange.
Haddad represented a space of rationality in the environment of PT’s tensions with the opposition and paid a price for this in the party. He was seen almost as a fifth columnist. Blamed for the government’s setbacks, he found himself isolated and often disqualified for being excessively restrained.
The situation hit him personally. The tiredness and discomfort were clear on his face. To the point that, at the time, there was speculation about his remaining in the ministry. He was even considered excluded from the PT’s electoral possibilities. Someone like that, with such balanced manners, could not hope to eventually replace (PT) in the presidential race or in the state dispute in São Paulo.
But that was all a while ago; Fernando Haddad has changed. He donned the uniform of a militant, adopted platform vocabulary and began to show himself as a keen fighter of “us against them” and now in the clash with Congress, called by the government to close public accounts.
Before that, it would have been unimaginable to hear from Haddad, for example, terms like “wag your tail” to say what Brazil will not do in addressing the American tariff crisis. I could express the idea of haughtiness in another way, but the choice of words did not happen by chance.
The language adopted when demanding the approval of new taxes also seemed well calculated: “We need to charge those who live in the penthouse and don’t want to pay for the condominium.” Haddad was once again respected and defended in the PT, he began to be seen with reservations by the residents of the “penthouse” and he looks like a candidate.
