“I can’t live with people like that”: the still mayor of Setúbal refuses the mandate (and Maria das Dores)

André Martins does not see “political dignity” in the future president – ​​who was from the PCP and has now become independent supported by the PSD.

André Martins is still the president of the Municipal Council of Setúbal but, as if, the CDU had a significant drop in this year’s local elections in that municipality. André Martins just stayed in fourth place.

Even though he was behind three lists, André managed to be elected. In fact, it was the only councilor elected communist – the CDU had 5 councilors, now has just one.

But this councilor will not be André Martins – who resigned to the mandate.

“I do not recognize political dignity who will assume the responsibilities of President of the Chamber and, therefore, I will not take office in this executive. It’s a personal issue”, told in the newspaper.

Maria das Dores Meira is the target. The former mayor (for the CDU) will return to lead the municipality (independent, supported by the PSD), even after being involved in 103 thousand euros, made by the municipality.

A audit, requested by the current executive, the use of Chamber credit cards. The investigation indicates that Maria das Dores Meira received undue allowances and used money from the Chamber for personal matters; and did not justify several bank transactions.

In fact, this process resulted in an intern in the PSD, when the party’s National Political Commission announced that it would support his candidacy.

Now, and with a chronological line, André Martins justifies his resignation: “Someone who comes to say on television that an audit that had been approved by the City Council to be carried out between January 1, 2017 and October 30, 2024; and then, already elected, comes to say that the president of the Chamber decided to tell the company to only carry out the evaluation until October 2021; is the one who was certainly capable of doing this.”

“I would never be able to do something like that. I can’t live with people who have this behavior. Or with people who are capable of saying that the chargeable parking contest is all my responsibility”, commented the PCP activist.

Nuno Costa, number two on the CDU list, he will be the communist councilor in the Setúbal City Council.

The inauguration will take place next week, October 30th.
