Inmate escapes during external work and exposes serious flaws in the management of the Acre prison system

Another escape recorded in the Acre penitentiary system exposes the fragility of the administration of the State Penitentiary Administration Institute (Iapen) and the lack of effective control over inmates benefiting from external work. The case reinforces the scenario of crisis and internal disorganization that has been denounced by the agency’s employees.

The prisoner identified as Vandré Lira de Melo, aged 39, took advantage of the benefit of working outside the walls of the prison unit to escape during working hours. He worked on a construction project near the Canil, in Rio Branco. The escape occurred around 11 am this Wednesday (23), but the detainee’s absence was only noticed around four hours later, around 3 pm.

According to information provided by prison officers, the current operational director of Iapen has been rarely present in security routines and is practically unknown to the troops. This lack of proximity, according to employees, weakens the coordination of preventive actions and compromises internal authority, directly affecting the security of the units.

Workers in the prison system demand urgent measures and a change in management, arguing that institutional security should once again be a priority. They also demand the strengthening of operational teams and the appreciation of professionals who keep the system functioning, even in the face of a lack of structure and administrative support.

The report contacted the management of Iapen, but, until the closing of this edition, had not received a response. The space remains open for clarifications.
