“Less tantrums please.” Chega does not give in to the loss of nationality for serious crimes

The president of Chega, André Ventura (L), talks to the deputy of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Hugo Soares

Terrorism and rape are red lines for André Ventura. And there is yet another “insurmountable point” on which the two parties differ.

PSD parliamentary leader Hugo Soares called for maturity this Wednesday instead of tantrums and greater political responsibility, after the president of Chega placed “red lines” to accept an agreement on the review of the nationality law.

“I hope there are no more tantrums and that there is maturity democratic so that this law can see the light of day”, said Hugo Soares, in parliament, without directly commenting on Venturam’s demands immediately following a press conference by the Chega leader during which he threatened to break up if PSD and CDS do not give in to some of these demands.

Soares went even further. “In the PSD, we do not bring to the public square the negotiations that are ongoing between the parliamentary groups” for the review of the nationality law, he said.

Among other points, the leader of Chega stressed that the inclusion of a standard that provides for loss of nationality for those who commit serious crimeslike terrorism, is a red line to approve the revision of the nationality law.

“I don’t know if we will reach a consensus or not, I don’t know if we will reach an understanding or not, there is one thing that is clear to us, and I would like to make it clear to the Government as well. If Portuguese nationality is not lost by those who commit crimes of terrorism and rape, we are out this scenario”, he stated.

“This is truly a red line, that anyone who commits crimes in Portugal after obtaining Portuguese nationality, serious crimes, crimes against the State, crimes against the Portuguese, cannot continue to be Portuguese”, defended Ventura.

This, says Ventura, “is an issue that can raise questions of constitutionality”, but he pointed out that the use of burqas in public spaces “can also and the PSD voted in favor”.

André Ventura said that another “insurmountable point” is that anyone who requests Portuguese nationality is not “dependent on Social Security support of any kind” when making the request. Chega also wants those who obtained Portuguese nationality “fraudulently” not to be able to recover it and admitted that this is another “divergence” with the Government and the PSD, who “understand that, after a while, this irregularity can be remedied”.

Ventura added that there has already been “an approximation” regarding the criteria for applying for nationality, with those who have been sentenced to sentences exceeding four years being prevented from doing so.
