The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva confirmed this Thursday (23) that will be a candidate for President of the Republic in 2026in search of your fourth term. The announcement was made during an official trip to Indonesiaalongside the country’s president, Prabowo Subianto.

“I’m going to run for a fourth term in Brazil. I’m prepared to run in other elections and try to make the relationship between Indonesia and Brazil increasingly valuable,” declared Lula at the Indonesian Presidential Palace.

The PT member, who will turn 80 years old in 2025, stated that he has the “same energy as when I was 30”. The speech ends speculation about a possible withdrawal for health reasons, raised in previous interviews.

During the speech, Lula also defended multilateralism and criticized policies of trade protectionismreinforcing Brazil’s role in international dialogue. He also highlighted the importance of expand partnerships with Southeast Asian countriesespecially in the export of animal protein — an area in which Brazil is already among the largest suppliers to Indonesia.

On Friday (24), the Brazilian president will participate in a meeting with the secretary general of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)before continuing to Malaysiawhere he will sign new bilateral agreements.
