The leader of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced on Wednesday (22) that the country has positioned more than five thousand missiles from the Russian-made Igla-S air defense system in strategic locations throughout the country, highlighting the importance of these weapons to guarantee peace and stability in the country.
During a televised ceremony with government officials, Maduro highlighted the fundamental role of Igla-S systems, stating that Venezuela has mobilized “more than five thousand Igla-S in key air defense points to ensure peace, stability and security for the Venezuelan people.”
The statement came amid increased US military operations against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean and Pacific regions.

On the same Wednesday, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reported that the American armed forces eliminated five suspected drug traffickers in attacks on two vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean, expanding military use in the Trump administration’s anti-drug campaign.
These attacks are in addition to at least seven others carried out in the Caribbean, intensifying tensions between the US, Venezuela and Colombia. In the Caribbean, the actions resulted in the deaths of at least 32 people, although the American government released little information about the quantity of drugs seized or the evidence that would justify the operations.
Trump also reaffirmed his plans to attack targets on Venezuelan soil, which would represent an escalation in the conflict, and stated that, if this occurs, the US Congress will be informed.

Maduro denied any connection to drug trafficking and classified the American attacks as a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
