The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced this Wednesday (22) that he will take legal action in the US courts.
The speech comes after Petro was called a “criminal” and threatened to “take serious measures” against the country for drug trafficking.
In a post on X, Petro said he would defend himself in court with American lawyers in the American justice system against the “slanderous accusations made against me in the United States by high-ranking authorities.
The growing tensions gained a new episode when he told reporters at the White House this Wednesday (25) that he was suspending all payments to the country due to the country’s role in the international narcotics trade.
Over the weekend, Trump labeled Petro a “drug trafficking leader” and threatened to increase tariffs on the drug.
In mid-September, the American president decertified Colombia’s anti-narcotics efforts, claiming the country had failed to meet its obligations last year.
