Pyongyang confirms launch of hypersonic missiles before APEC summit

The missile launch was detected on Wednesday by the South Korean army

North Korea said this Thursday that it had tested hypersonic missiles, presented as “cutting-edge weapons”, with the aim of testing the regime’s defense capabilities against “potential enemies”.

The launch of the missiles was detected on Wednesday by the South Korean army.

North Korea said the two “hypersonic projectiles” were launched south of the capital, Pyongyang, and hit a target in the northeast of the country.

The maneuver took place just a week before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the South Korean city of Gyeongju, where several leaders are expected, including US President Donald Trump.

Quoted by the official North Korean news agency KCNA, the Pak regime’s top military official Jong Chon stated that “this new cutting-edge weapons system [foi] clear proof of the constant improvement of North Korea’s technical self-defense capabilities.

This test aimed to reinforce “the durability and effectiveness of strategic deterrence against potential enemies”, the agency also reported.

In images released by KCNA, it is possible to see a missile in the air before hitting a target and exploding in a cloud of smoke.

Hypersonic missiles reach more than five times the speed of sound and can be maneuvered in mid-flight, making them more difficult to track and intercept.
