Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his delegation in Brussels on Wednesday evening. According to him, they agreed that the growing pressure in the European Union will probably contribute to a certain revision of the planned ban on the sale of cars with an internal combustion engine after 2035. TASR’s special reporter informs about this.
“Together with the German Chancellor, we concluded that the result of increasing pressure will most likely be some form of revision of this ban, for example, in the form of continued production of cars with a hybrid drive,” wrote Fico on the social network Facebook.
The prime minister emphasized that the connection between the Slovak and German economies is so significant that consultations at the level of executive heads are necessary. Fico also revealed that Merz plans to visit Slovakia and is currently working on a date suitable for both parties.
In addition to opinions on the automotive industry, the two leaders also exchanged information on other positions on the European Council meeting, which takes place on Thursday in Brussels. Fico also informed Merz about the progress of the joint session of the Slovak and Ukrainian governments in Košice on October 17 and about the recent change to the Constitution of the Slovak Republic.
