The East Wing of the White House was completely demolished on Thursday evening. This follows from photos taken by the AP agency. US President Donald Trump wants to build a new ballroom in its place, reports TASR.
American first ladies and their staff have traditionally operated and worked in the East Wing. Now, in its place, a ballroom will be built for more than 300 million dollars, which will be twice the size of the entire White House.
According to his own words, the current president will pay part of the money for the construction himself, the rest will be provided by private donors and corporate companies. Last week, Trump hosted a lavish dinner for these funders, which included several leading American technology firms.
Trump authorized the demolition this week despite not yet receiving approval from the relevant government authorities. The redevelopment has been criticized by conservationists, who have called for a halt to demolition until plans to build the 8,000-square-metre ballroom go through a mandatory public review process. The president’s plans are also critical of the Democrats, who accused the head of the White House of insufficient respect for the seat of the American president.
