On Wednesday evening, the United States imposed new sanctions on Russia targeting the two largest Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced this on Wednesday evening, according to which these companies “finance the Kremlin’s military machine”. TASR writes about it according to AFP and AP agencies.
- The US has imposed new sanctions on Russian oil companies.
- Sanctions affect companies Rosneft and Lukoil financing military operations.
- The goal is to limit the financing of the war in Ukraine and the Russian economy.
- Bessent called for an immediate ceasefire between the parties.
- The new measures are supported by Trump’s efforts to end the conflict.
Sanctions according to the US Department increasing pressure on Russia’s energy sector and reducing the Kremlin’s ability to raise funds to continue the war in Ukraine and to support its weakened economy.
“Now is the time to stop the killing and declare an immediate ceasefire,” Bessent said. “Given (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin’s refusal to end this senseless war, the Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on the two largest Russian oil companies that finance the Kremlin’s military machine. The Treasury Department is ready to take additional measures if needed to support (US) President (Donald) Trump’s efforts to end another war. We call on our allies to join us in abiding by these sanctions,” he added.
Trump delayed the imposition of new sanctions on Russia for several months, hoping that he would be able to convince Putin, to proceed to a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, reminds AFP.
In an interview with Fox Business shortly before the sanctions were imposed, Bessent said that “President Putin did not come to the negotiations with an honest and open approach” and stated that Trump is disappointed with the current state of peace negotiations. The imposition of sanctions by the US comes shortly after the EU member countries agreed on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.
