US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, could have “great influence” over Russian leader Vladimir Putin over efforts to end the war in Ukraine. “I think he can have a great influence on Putin… Look, he’s a respected man. He’s a very strong leader, a very big country. Yes, I think he can have a great influence. And we will certainly talk about Russia, Ukraine,” Trump told reporters at the White House. Trump’s comments come days before a scheduled meeting between the US leader and his Chinese counterpart in South Korea, on the sidelines of the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Trump had the personal chemistry to get along with Putin in pursuit of a peace deal in Ukraine, but he has been thwarted time and again by the Russian leader.
