President Lula (PT) confirmed in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, his intention to contest the presidential elections in 2026, marking the first time that he has spoken directly on the matter. During his speech, he made a point of emphasizing his energy and physical disposition for the position. The decision is accompanied by a clear strategy to avoid comparisons with Joe Biden, who faced criticism due to his advanced age, according to an analysis by Jussara Soares, in CNN Prime Time.

To this end, Lula has carried out public demonstrations of physical vigor, including a recent activity on the Esplanada dos Ministérios where he covered around five kilometers.

Measures aimed at 2026

Planning for the electoral dispute is already reflected in several government actions. Among the main initiatives is one for those earning up to R$5,000, a project that has already passed the Chamber of Deputies and awaits approval in the Senate. This measure represents the fulfillment of one of the main promises of the 2022 campaign.

Other proposals focusing on 2026 include programs such as “Gás do Povo”, “Luz do Povo”, in addition to the defense of the 6×1 scale and zero fares in public transport. A project is also being developed, prepared by the Ministry of Justice, which aims to address public security issues, a topic identified as the main concern of Brazilians.

Electoral scenario

Lula’s announcement directly impacts the political scenario for 2026, which presents several possible right-wing candidates. Among them, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who maintains his speech of prioritizing re-election, and Ratinho Júnior (PSD), governor of the state of Paraná, who is often cited as an alternative, stand out.

Other names under discussion include the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), and the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSD), who present themselves as options for the presidential dispute.
