The governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), sent a letter to Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) and made Brasília available to hold the Copa Libertadores final.
The match is scheduled for November 29, in Lima, Peru. But the country’s interim government, led by José Jerí, declared a state of emergency in the capital last Tuesday (21) to contain a wave of violence and extortion attributed to organized crime.
Conmebol did not comment on the possibility of changing the location of the final. For now, say its leaders, the plan is to maintain the previously established schedule. They have been in contact with Peruvian authorities since the dismissal of President Dina Boluarte on October 10th.
“In view of the state of emergency declared in Lima, Peru, I offered Brasília as an alternative venue for the Libertadores 2025 final”, wrote Ibaneis Rocha on his account on the social network X.
In the publication, the governor of the DF informed that he formalized his proposal in letters sent to Conmebol and the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) making the Mané Garrincha stadium available for the final.
“Our city has a wide hotel network, urban infrastructure and quality services, as well as consolidated experience in major international sporting events, such as the World Cup and the Olympic Games”, added Rocha.
The Libertadores semifinals feature two Brazilian teams, one on each side of the group. Flamengo and Palmeiras face, respectively, Argentine Racing and Ecuadorian LDU.
