The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police’s siege of the illegal cell phone market has entered a new phase. After the deadline for returning devices identified as stolen or stolen expires, around 4,200 people who ignored the corporation’s notifications could be charged with receiving stolen goods.
The deadline for delivery ended on Thursday (23). As of this Friday (24), the names of users who remain with the devices will be included on the list of those investigated in Operation Rastreio, created to dismantle the clandestine cell phone trade in the state.
The Civil Police Secretary, Felipe Curi, stated that anyone who failed to comply with the deadline would be held criminally responsible. “These people will have notes due to reception and still run the risk of receiving the Civil Police at home,” he said.

Since its launch in May, Operation Rastreio has led to the arrest of almost 700 people and the recovery of more than 10,000 devices. On the so-called “D-Day”, held this week, 271 suspects were arrested and more than 4,000 cell phones were seized across the state.
During the actions, agents inspected more than a thousand commercial establishments and closed eight stores suspected of receiving stolen products. All devices collected will undergo technical expertise, and the legitimate owners must be contacted to recover their goods.
Scams and fake agents
The Civil Police also warns of the increase in scams involving fake police officers. Criminals have been sending messages via SMS and chat apps, with fraudulent links that report supposed “recoveries” of devices.

The agency reinforces that it does not send communications via messages and that checking must be done directly on the official website of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro.
