Who is Facundo Tello?
Facundo Tello, whose full name is Facundo Raúl Tello Figueroa, is an Argentine football referee born in Bahía Blanca on May 4, 1982. Considered one of the main referees in South America, he has refereed Argentine first division games since 2013 and has been a member of FIFA’s international team since 2019.
His career includes participation in several elite tournaments, such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he refereed, among other games, the controversial quarter-final match between Morocco and Portugal, which generated criticism from Portuguese players.
Tello is also a constant presence in CONMEBOL competitions, having been the referee of the 2024 Copa Libertadores final between Botafogo and Atlético-MG, in addition to refereeing the 2024 Recopa Sul-Americana. He also participated in the Club World Cup and, as part of an exchange between confederations, refereed Euro 2024 games in Germany.
Tello is known for his rigorous style and for not hesitating to apply cards, becoming famous worldwide in 2022 for distributing a record 10 red cards in the final of the Argentine Champions Trophy, between Boca Juniors and Racing.
