On Friday, Japanese fighter jets took off to Russian military planes that were approaching Japanese airspace and the country’s coast. The information was also confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense. According to him, the squadron with Tu-95 strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons was conducting a routine patrol flight over neutral waters. Reuters drew attention to it, TASR informs.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense has published a map showing the flight path of Russian aircraft off the west coast of Japan over the Sea of Japan. Two Tu-95 bombers accompanied two Su-35 fighter jets and initially flew towards the Japanese island of Sado, but then changed course to the north. “Russia conducts military operations around our country on a daily basis and at the same time attacks Ukraine – that is the reality,” wrote Defense Minister Shinjiró Koizumi in a post on X.
The incident happened a few hours before the first speech of new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in parliament, in which she promised greater investment in defense. In it, she also emphasized that the military activities of Russia, China and North Korea are a reason for “serious concern”. In a post on the social network X on Friday, she praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian people for their courage to “defy aggression every day.”
