Trump administration officials reportedly discussed the White House chief’s meeting with Kim
Trump will arrive in Asia for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which will take place from October 31 to November 1 in the South Korean city of Gyeongju, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur.
US media reported that Trump administration officials have privately discussed arranging a meeting between the White House chief and Kim, who last met in 2019.
South Korean Minister Jong said on Friday that the DPRK appeared to be “paying attention to the United States, and various signals…indicate a significant likelihood of a meeting.”
Kim Jong Un: I have fond memories of President Trump
Trump hinted in August that he might meet with the North Korean leader during his second term. Kim Jong-un said in September that he still has “pleasant memories” of the US president, whom he met three times during his tenure. He added that he was open to talks with the United States if they dropped the demand that the DPRK give up its nuclear weapons.
Although there has been no official announcement of a possible planned meeting between Trump and Kim, South Korea and the UN Command have suspended inspections of the Joint Security Zone. Unification Minister Chong says the North Koreans have been spotted “cleaning and beautifying” areas near the demilitarized zone for the first time this year.
