Lula says there may not be an immediate meeting agreement with Trump in Malaysia

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Friday, the 24th, that he does not expect an immediate agreement with President Donald Trump, at the meeting they will hold on Sunday, the 26th, in Malaysia.

The president stated that the meeting scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Kuala Lumpur will require a sequence of technical and political negotiations, between Brazilian ministers and US secretaries.

“If I didn’t believe it was possible to make an agreement, I wouldn’t participate in the meeting. Although the agreement certainly won’t be made tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow when I meet with him again. The agreement will be made by the negotiators,” said Lula, in an interview before taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital.

“I never participate in a meeting if I don’t believe in the success of the meeting. I will only know if it is a success or not if I participate. So I will participate in the meeting with the expectation that we will be successful in what Brazil is interested in.”

Questioned by Estadão Regarding the deadline that Brazil considers reasonable for an agreement, Lula stated that “the sooner the better”.

“If I could give you an answer, I would. I wanted it to be yesterday, but if it’s tomorrow, that’s fine. The faster, the better”, he replied.

Lula was insistently asked about the economic sectors on the agenda, such as critical minerals (including rare earths), but he did not answer what proposal he would make to the USA.

The PT member stated that the meeting has been awaited for some time and that Brazil has always been available to talk. The negotiators on the Brazilian side are the ministers.

Lula said that there was a “certain truncation” in the negotiations, but that after the phone call between them things moved forward. The PT member says he wants to rebuild a civilized relationship with the USA.

“I have every interest in having this meeting, I have every willingness to defend Brazil’s interests and show that there were mistakes in the taxation of Brazil and I want to discuss a little the punishments given to Brazilian ministers of the Supreme Court who have no explanation.”

Lula said he will hold a “no frills” meeting with Trump, with objectivity and sincerity. He cited as examples the rising price of meat in the USA and inflation on coffee in the American domestic market. Brazil expects, behind the scenes, that these products will be removed from the tariff.
