Macron says it is too early to give a firm opinion on the EU-Mercosur agreement, but sees progress

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday it was too early to express France’s firm opinion on the planned trade deal between the EU and Mercosur, but that steps were being taken in the right direction.

France, which has been a vocal opponent of the deal, was encouraged by a proposed safeguard clause and better control over food products entering the European Union, but was waiting for the work to be completed.

“Today, the French government, like others, is waiting for answers. But all of this is going in the right direction to protect the most exposed sectors and also to protect European consumers,” Macron said at a news conference after an EU summit in Brussels.
