The first life sentence for a woman in France: the brutal murder shocked Paris

A French court sentenced an Algerian woman to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of schoolgirl Lola Davietová. The case sent a wave of anti-immigration sentiment across the country.

Paris, October 24 (TASR) – On Friday, a French court sentenced an Algerian woman to life imprisonment without the possibility of early release for the rape, torture and murder of a schoolgirl in Paris in 2022. According to the AFP agency, she is the first woman sentenced to the highest possible sentence, writes TASR.

Dáhbija Benkiredová (27) was found guilty of the rape, torture and murder of 12-year-old Lola Davietová. The case sparked a wave of anti-immigration sentiment because the woman had expired student visas and remained in France illegally.

Daviet disappeared in the northeastern part of Paris and her body was found in a suitcase in the lobby of the building where her father and mother worked as caretakers.

“In determining the appropriate sentence, the court took into account the unimaginable psychological damage suffered by the victim and her family in such violent and almost indescribable circumstances,” the presiding judge declared, emphasizing the “extreme cruelty of these crimes.”

On Friday, the prosecutor proposed a life sentence without the possibility of parole for Benkiredová.

The perpetrator apologized for her actions at the beginning of the trial last week. Three psychiatrists confirmed that they had noted psychopathic tendencies in her and, according to them, she does not suffer from a mental illness that could be cured.

Conservative and far-right politicians used the case to call for stricter enforcement of immigration laws. The victim’s mother called on politicians to stop exploiting her daughter’s death, AFP explains.
