The Republican added that, despite the tensions, “we don’t want to raise tariffs on China. It wouldn’t be sustainable for them”, but reiterated that new tariffs on the Asian country will come into force on November 1st – if there is no agreement with Xi.
At an event at the White House, he said he believed that the next meeting between the two leaders, scheduled for Thursday, “will end very well”, signaling a willingness for dialogue, but maintaining a tough tone in relation to drug trafficking and Beijing’s role.
