The Portuguese women’s football team achieved a historic victory in the early hours of this Friday, defeating the United States 2-1 in Chester, Pennsylvania. It was the first time that Portugal beat the powerful North American team, currently number two in the FIFA world rankings.
The game did not start well for the Navigators. After 33 seconds, Rose Lavelle opened the scoring after an excellent pass from Macario, taking advantage of a distraction from the Portuguese defense. However, Francisco Neto’s team reacted with determination.
In the 41st minute, Kika Nazareth scored a precise corner and Diana Gomes appeared at the near post to equalize with a header. In the second half, in the 72nd minute, another corner taken by Kika resulted in a goal, this time it was Fátima Pinto who completed the turnaround and fixed the final result at 2-1.
With this victory, Portugal breaks a long fast, as they have not won since February 26, against Belgium, in the Nations League. Since then, the team has recorded six defeats and two draws.
