Student Rafael dos Anjos Martins died this Thursday (23), who was hospitalized for more than 50 days in a coma at Hospital São Luiz, in Osasco, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, due to drinking adulterated drinks. The information was confirmed by the victim’s family.
“With a heavy heart, I come to share that our dear Rafael has gone into the arms of God. After 53 days in a coma, the Lord called him to rest in peace, free from all pain and suffering”, says a statement.
He had been hospitalized since September 1st. The very serious case was one of the first in the sequence of poisonings due to the consumption of alcoholic beverages contaminated with methanol in several regions of the State, especially in the capital and metropolitan region.
What the police report says
According to the Police Report, nurses at the General Hospital of Grajaú, where he was initially treated, reported that the student had been poisoned with methanol on September 1st and that the medical team requested a trace of the victim’s steps.
Soon after, he was transferred to Hospital São Luiz, in Osasco, to undergo hemodialysis sessions. On September 2, the victim’s aunt attended the 48th Police Station, in Cidade Dutra, and reported that her nephew had been diagnosed with methanol poisoning. She was accompanied by the mother of a 25-year-old girl, who had the same diagnosis.
The consumption allegedly took place at his home, in the early hours of August 31, shortly after the young man had purchased the drink at an establishment called Empório Santos, in a promotional package that included gin, coconut water ice and energy drink. Five people who participated in the gathering, aged between 23 and 27, allegedly consumed the drink.
The most serious case was that of the student, who had drunk the drink pure, according to witnesses. The other guests mixed the gin with the other drinks. After waking up, he reported severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and later began screaming that he was blind.
The police collected two bottles of gin that were in the victim’s house. Another 14 bottles were seized at Adega Santos, the establishment where relatives reported that the drink had been purchased.
At the time, representatives of the establishment told the police that the group of friends is known locally, as they always drink large quantities of alcohol. The employees stated that the boy already showed signs of intoxication and that he may have consumed alcohol in other establishments.
