One month before the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém (PA), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that the resources needed for Brazil to abandon the use of fossil fuels “come exactly from oil” and that the fuel “will still be needed for many decades”.
— It is very easy to criticize the use of fossil fuels, but it is difficult to point out who, today, has the real means to free themselves from them. Nobody has it – declared the president.
According to Lula, the country intends to use the revenue generated by oil to finance the energy transition. He also highlighted that Petrobras should use these resources to gradually transform “from an oil company into an energy company”.

Asked about what message Brazil intends to convey to the world given the advancement of studies for oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin, Lula stated that it is important to recognize that the country is among those that produce the most renewable energy on the planet.
— Brazilian gasoline uses 30% ethanol. Therefore, our gasoline is cleaner than that of other countries. Our diesel oil contains 20% biodiesel, which also makes it less polluting — he said.

The president also highlighted that exploration in the Equatorial Margin has not yet been approved, as Ibama has only authorized research in the region.
— And between doing the research and finding oil, it takes a lot of time, because new licenses are needed for each stage. This is in a company that has expertise — said Lula.
