During an official visit to Malaysia, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) gave a speech this Saturday (25) in which he criticized what he called the “appropriation of the State by the richest” and stated that governing means “taking care of the people most in need”.
“The rich don’t need the State. They often usurp and take advantage of State things that should be dedicated to the poorest,” said the president, speaking in the administrative city of Putrajaya, seat of the Malaysian government.
Lula was received by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, leader of the center-left Popular Justice Party. The meeting takes place on the eve of the bilateral meeting with Donald Trump, in Kuala Lumpur, on Brazilian products.

“I prefer to care than to govern”
In his speech, the PT member avoided the technical language of politics and reinforced the idea of proximity to the population:
“Our mission is to take care of the people we represent. Taking care of the people means taking care of those most in need. I don’t like the word governing — I like caring.”
The speech is part of Lula’s strategy to reaffirm his social agenda abroad, at a time when the Planalto is trying to show a balance between social inclusion and economic stability, especially after Trump’s criticism of Brazilian environmental and trade policy.
