MPF appeals to prevent auction of blocks in the Foz do Amazonas Basin

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) filed an appeal with the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF-1) to try to reverse the decision of the Federal Court that denied a previous request to prevent the approval of the final result of the auction of 19 blocks in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, held in June by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP).

According to the MPF, the appeal requests the immediate prohibition of any environmental licensing process at Ibama. For the agency, contracts should only be formalized after the conclusion of the Climate Impact Study (EIC), the Environmental Assessment of Sedimentary Areas (AAAS) and the Studies of Indigenous Components, Quilombolas and Traditional Peoples and Communities (ECI/ECQ).

The request comes in the same week that Petrobras obtained the license from Ibama to explore the first well in the Foz do Amazonas basin.

In this Friday’s appeal, the MPF also requests that new blocks in the Foz do Amazonas Basin not be included in future auctions.

“The absence of studies and consultation in the pre-bidding phase is a serious offense to the legal system and the international commitments assumed by Brazil”, states the MPF.
