PF threatens to suspend issuing of passports due to lack of funds

The PF (Federal Police) threatened to suspend the issuance of passports again due to lack of budgetary resources from November onwards.

The corporation sent a letter to the MJSP () and the MPO (Ministry of Planning and Budget) warning of the risk of service interruption.

In a note, the MJSP informed that it “acts in an active and coordinated manner to ensure the continuity of passport issuances by the Federal Police” and that it maintains dialogue with the government’s economic area to provide the necessary resources.

The ministry also highlighted that the service is “essential to Brazilian citizens” and that “all measures are being adopted to avoid any interruption”.

In April of this year, the PF had already signaled after the Ministry of Planning announced a funding contingency that blocked around R$133 million from the corporation’s budget. At the time, the impasse was resolved and the service remained operational.

In 2022, however, the lack of resources led to . In November of that year, the PF suspended passport issuances due to a lack of funds allocated to migration control and the preparation of travel documents.
