Bridge collapses in Maranhão and truck falls into Alpergatas river

Residents claim that the structure had shown signs of wear for 3 months; driver suffered minor injuries

A wooden bridge collapsed on Friday (October 24, 2025) while a cargo truck was crossing the structure on the stretch of MA-272 between the Maranhão municipalities of Fernando Falcão and Mirador, 554 km from São Luís.

Residents told the that the bridge had already shown signs of wear for at least 90 days, which may have contributed to the accident. The collapse was recorded by a resident of the region, and the images show the truck almost completing the crossing when the structure gives way and the vehicle falls into the Alpergatas River.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries. He was taken to a local hospital. According to witnesses, after the collapse, the vehicle ended up being dragged by the river current.

In response to what happened, Sinfra-MA (State Secretariat for Infrastructure of Maranhão) informed that it is carrying out a technical survey at the site to prepare the construction project for a new bridge over the Alpergatas river.

The company responsible for the work has already started work to replace the damaged structure.
