Independent left-wing candidate Catherine Connolly won the presidential election held yesterday, Friday, in , as her only rival and member of the centrist Fine Gael party conceded defeat.
“Catherine will be a president for all of us and she will be my president,” Heather Humphries told public broadcaster RTE. Connolly was also congratulated by Simon Harris, the Irish deputy prime minister, also from Fine Gael, a pillar of the ruling coalition. “I wish her every success,” he said.
