In an interview with CNN Prime TimeLeonardo Trevisan, professor of International Relations at ESPM, stated that the meeting between Lula and Donald Trump in Malaysia could mark a moment for the resumption of commercial relations between Brazil and the United States on a path considered sensible for both countries.
Pressure to make the meeting viable came from various economic sectors in the US, including . “The group expressed specific concern about coffee prices, a product that drives consumption in establishments. Furthermore, around 6,000 American industries maintain production chains interconnected with Brazil”, explains Trevisan.
Brazilian diplomacy also played a fundamental role in clearly demonstrating the country’s position. According to the professor, in the meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Chancellor Mauro Vieira reaffirmed that Brazil is aligned with the geopolitical axis of the West, despite commercial relations with China.
“Brazilian diplomacy knows perfectly well how it is equidistant between two giants, like the USA and China, thinking about our interests”, says Trevisan.
In the context of , the professor points to Brazil as the country that has a relevant role given its size and importance in Latin America. “The Brazilian position is considered crucial to avoid a possible military intervention in the region, which could break more than 50 years of stability on the continent”, says Trevisan.
For the professor, there is a tendency, even in the Secretariat of State, to seek a diplomatic solution to the Venezuelan issue. This approach suggests a more prudent path in international relations on the continent, avoiding breaking important diplomatic limits in Latin America.
