The start of negotiations to resolve the tariff imposed by the United States on Brazilian products was postponed until this Monday (27).
The delegations from the two countries were supposed to meet on Sunday night (26), Malaysian time, but they rescheduled the meeting for 8 am on Monday, according to information from the Economic Value.
The bilateral talks were supposed to mark the first practical stage of the political agreement signed between presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Donald Trump, during a meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this weekend.

Rescheduled meeting
According to sources heard by the newspaper, the delegations’ busy schedules led to the postponement. At around 9pm local time (10am in Brazil), a phone call between authorities defined the new time for the opening round.
Chancellor Mauro Vieira, MDIC executive secretary, Márcio Elias Rosa, and Planalto’s international advisor, Audo Faleiros, participated in the conversation. On the American side, the head of the USTR (United States Trade Representative), Jamieson Greer, and members of the White House economic team were present.
The result of this contact should be detailed by President Lula in a press conference, this Sunday night, Brasília time.

Next steps
This Monday’s negotiations should open the technical process to discuss the suspension of the 50% tariffs imposed by Washington on Brazilian exports, considered by Itamaraty as “unjustified from an economic point of view”.
According to minister Mauro Vieira, President Trump was willing to “correct distortions” and initiate short-term bilateral negotiations. The Brazilian government’s objective is that, within a few weeks, the affected sectors will have surcharges reduced or eliminated.
