Trump increases tariffs on Canadian products by 10%

Republican says the measure is in retaliation for a video released by the Ontario government with speeches by Ronald Reagan

The President of the United States, (Republican Party), this Saturday (October 25, 2025) will charge an additional tariff of 10% on all Canadian products. The decision was announced 1 day after the republican trade negotiations with the neighboring country.

Currently, Canada already faces average tariffs of 35% on its products exported to the USA, with specific taxes on certain items:

  • madeira – 10%;
  • cabinets kitchen, bathroom sinks and upholstered furniture – 25%.

In his profile on Truth Social, Trump once again criticized the broadcast of a statement containing statements by former president Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) about tariffs. This is an advertisement produced and broadcast by the government of Ontario, Canada.

“Because of this misrepresentation of facts and because of this hostile act, I am increasing Canada’s tariff by 10% on top of what they are paying now.”Trump wrote.

In the video, Reagan says tariffs only work for a short time. They then lead to retaliation from other countries, resulting in more tariffs. It claims that eventually people stop buying, the market shrinks and millions of people lose their jobs.

On Friday (Oct 24), Trump canceled a possible meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and harshly criticized what he called “dirty game” by Canada. The episode took place in Washington, where relations between the 2 North American countries were already tense due to ongoing trade negotiations.

The tariff increase takes place while Canada, the USA and Mexico negotiate the renewal of the T-MEC (Mexico-United States-Canada Treaty), a treaty that keeps around 85% of trade between the 3 countries tariff-free. No details were released about which specific products will be affected by the new increase or when the measure will take effect.
