Vladimir Herzog Square pays homage to journalists on the promenade – 10/26/2025 – Poder

The Cultural Collective Association of Friends of Vladimir Herzog Memorial Square inaugurated this Sunday (26) a sidewalk with tributes to winners of the award named after the journalist, murdered 50 years ago.

Called the Promenade of Recognition, the space is located in the Vladimir Herzog Memorial Square, in the center of , behind the . The bricks will have 1,625 names of winners of the Vladimir Herzog Prize over 47 editions.

The inauguration comes in the wake of the memory of , then director of , after (Information Operations Detachment – Internal Defense Operations Center) of the capital of São Paulo.

The work takes place in phases, and this Sunday bricks were laid by 52 journalists honored in the special category of the Vladimir Herzog Prize — in addition to those awarded annually, they are chosen for relevant services to democratic causes, peace and justice.

The award is promoted by the Vladimir Herzog Institute together with 13 other entities, such as Abraji (Brazilian Investigative Association) and Fenaj (National Federation of Journalists).

The winners of this year’s Special Prize were journalist Dorrit Harazim and Dom Angélico Bernardino, posthumously awarded for having died in April this year.

Patrícia Campos Mello won the Special Award in 2019, together with , founder of the website The Intercept Brasil.

In the same year, in the memory category, the commission recognized Hermínio Sacchetta (1909-1982), who worked for the Editorial Board of Sheet. Editor of the newspaper A Classe Operária, he was arrested during the Estado Novo dictatorship (1937-1945), by Getúlio Vargas.

In previous editions, names such as , columnist for Sheetand , TV Globo investigative reporter murdered in 2002.
