Gesture from Lula and Trump unlocks technical agenda, says Alckmin

Interim president states that the leaders’ meeting was “the most important step” and demands progress in tariffs and investments

The interim president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, (PSB), said this Monday (Oct 27, 2025) that the political rapprochement between the presidents of Brazil, (PT), and the USA, Donald Trump (Republican Party) was the “most important step” to “open the doors of understanding” bilateral.

According to Alckmin, this now allows technical negotiations to be accelerated, including tax guidelines and investment attraction. The statement was made to journalists at the Vice-Presidency of the Republic, in Brasília.

“The political step was taken with brilliance and praise. Now it is time to establish an objective work agenda”he declared. The priority now is to advance on economic issues: “tax, non-tax, opportunities and investments in both Brazil and the United States, in addition to economic complementarity”.

One of the urgent focuses is the review of tariffs applied to Brazilian products entering the USA. Alckmin criticized the current taxation.

These 10% plus 40% tariffs are totally inadequate. In reality, the average tariff from Brazil to the United States is only 2.7%. We need to resolve this quickly”these.

The interim president detailed that, of the US$40 billion exported to the North American country last year, 34% of products were affected by the additional tariff of 40%, which penalizes agribusiness and industrial sectors.

Regarding non-tariff barriers, Alckmin mentioned the interest of American companies in the data center sector. He highlighted the need for the National Congress to approve the provisional measure that regulates the sector in Brazil.

“This initiative can attract investments, especially considering the scenario of global energy scarcity, and Brazil has an abundance of renewable energy”he highlighted.

Asked about formal requests from the American government, Alckmin said there have been no requests yet, but emphasized the interest of the private sector. “American companies are interested in the tariff solution, as are Brazilian companies that are interested in exporting to the USA. Therefore, the participation of the private sector is essential to resolve difficulties and seek opportunities.”

He ended by reiterating that political rapprochement was the main step. “Now begins an important phase to deepen ties between the two largest democracies in the West.”
