President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that United States President Donald Trump “guaranteed” during a meeting between the two leaders that the two countries would reach an agreement on trade.
Lula stated in a press interview on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Malaysia that his discussions with Trump went well and that an agreement will be reached “faster than anyone imagines”.
Trump, after leaving Malaysia, said he had a “good meeting” with Lula, whom he described as “a pretty energetic guy,” but was uncertain about the prospects for a deal.

“I don’t know if anything is going to happen, but we’ll see,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One.
The United States imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian products and sanctions on Brazilian authorities, citing as justification the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro, which the US president classified as a “witch hunt”.
Lula said that the recent decisions taken by the United States against Brazil were “incorrect”.

However, he said he would be willing to discuss any issue with Trump and that he was also willing to help the United States on the Venezuela issue.
