Lula’s allies celebrate meeting with Trump and highlight the president’s ‘firm stance’

Allies of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) used the X to commemorate the meeting he had today in Malaysia with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. The government’s strategy was to capitalize on Lula’s stance as a “statesman” and a dialogue politician with a “strong stance”, after the months in which the White House was closed to the Brazilian government.

The leader of the PT in the Chamber, Lindbergh Farias (RJ), declared that the meeting symbolizes the “return of a Brazil that speaks as equals with the world”. According to Lindbergh, the president was “firm” in demanding the end of the 50% tariff on Brazilian products and made it clear that he is open to dialogue.

“The teams from both governments immediately begin negotiating a new trade agreement, capable of protecting jobs and national industry. Lula acts with pragmatism and responsibility, seeking concrete solutions to revoke political and economic sanctions without giving up Brazil’s self-determination,” said Lindbergh.

Lindbergh also attacked the family of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), suggesting that they suffered a setback when they saw an ally treating Lula cordially.

“You can imagine the atmosphere in the Bolsonaro family this Sunday to see their ‘idol’ receiving Lula with respect, after dedicating years of flattery and subservience, it must be a hard blow to the pride of the group that dreamed of a colonized Brazil”, said the PT leader in the Chamber.

The government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), said that Lula showed that he is “one of the greatest statesmen of our time” and also mentioned that the president adopted a “firm stance”. “Regardless of who is on the other side of the table, Brazil and our people will always come first,” said Wagner.

The government leader in Congress, senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP), suggested that Trump had been enchanted by Lula’s “charisma” during the meeting in Malaysia. “There are things that not even artificial intelligence can predict. But it happened: Lula and Trump side by side. I understand you, Trump, it’s difficult to resist our president’s charisma,” said Rodrigues.

The national president of the PT, Edinho Silva, stated that Brazil will maintain relevance on the world stage if it “defends respect and sovereignty”. “The world needs to strengthen the mechanisms of multilateralism. It is through more dialogue and not through impositions that we will solve the planet’s problems”, he added.

At Esplanada, the Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, published an analysis of the meeting between Lula and Trump. According to him, the meeting marked a “new look” that was more pragmatic and less ideological from Washington to Brasília. The minister also said that Lula won the meeting and preached defeat over Bolsonaro and right-wing governors who are pre-candidates for the Presidency of the Republic in 2026.

“And Lula wins, of course. He shows himself to the world as an experienced negotiator, capable of defending Brazil without bravado, without submission. The old trade union school still works: listening, dialoguing, getting results”, said Marinho.

The Secretary of Industrial Development, Innovation, Commerce and Services (SDIC), Uallace Moreira, highlighted the performance of his boss, the Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce (MDIC) and acting president, Geraldo Alckmin, as well as Lula during the tariff crisis. Moreira also said that the conversation in Malaysia was a “class in diplomacy and strategic negotiation”.

“President Lula and vice-president and minister Geraldo Alckmin, from the beginning, built a negotiation strategy that put Brazil’s sovereignty first, with the clarity of defending the Brazilian productive sector and jobs”, stated the secretary.
