Meeting with Trump could strengthen Lula and split the right, says political scientist

The meeting between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the President of the United States, Donald Trump, opens two fronts of repercussion, one being political and the other economic/commercial, said Rafael Cortez, political scientist and partner at Tendências Consultoria.

“Obviously, from an electoral point of view, this should bear fruit and generate a division within the right,” highlighted the expert.

Cortez also says that this division in the opposition must occur because “a portion of the right was betting on the split between Brazil and the United States and even fueled bilateral disputes, in such a way that, from a political-institutional point of view, regardless of future gains, the imagery policy already generates something positive for the government”, added the political scientist.

The front that represents the economic/commercial side generates a little more caution and a longer agenda, according to Cortez, since Brazil and the United States have important points of divergence, which involve security, multilateralism and geopolitical issues.

“It is a slower negotiation process, in any case, reading that the partnership with Brazil is positive, from a geopolitical point of view, looking at the American dilemmas, whether to help the inflationary issue domestically, or thinking about relations and competitions with China.”

Finally, Cortez says that despite being slow, the tendency is for countries to find a more positive balance than what exists today, where Brazil suffers from a much higher tariff than other countries, representing a vision of a Brazil far from the United States – a fact interrupted today with the meeting between the authorities.
