In it year 2018the president of Russia, announced the launch of a project to develop a new long range cruise missile baptized as Burevestnik.
Seven years later, the Russian president has reported that the Burevestnik missile, which has, has successfully completed during the last few days “litmus tests”.
After having been tested several times throughout this seven-year period, on this occasion the new Russian cruise missile has obtained much more positive results than in previous flights.
Specifically, the commander of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, has detailed that the Burevestnik missile has covered a distance of 14,000 kilometers in about 15 hours. To put that figure in context, it should be noted that Moscow and Madrid are separated by about 3,400 kilometers and that the distance between Moscow and Washington is approximately 7,800 kilometers.
This Sunday, in a speech, Putin stressed that the Burevestnik is “a unique weapon that no one else in the world has”. For his part, Gerasimov has assured that the cruise missile has a Virtually unlimited range.
The Burevestnik missile is located designed for low altitude flying (between 50 and 100 meters), which makes it practically ‘unstoppable’ for air defense systems. Additionally, as with other cruise missiles, the direction of the projectile can be changed in mid-flight.
In any case, the president of Russia has highlighted that the new cruise missile will not see the light of day in the short termsince there is still a lot of work to do until it joins the Russian offensive arsenal.
In that sense, still is unknown whether the Burevestnik will be classified by Russia as a conventional missile or whether it will have a nuclear warhead that turns it into a strategic weapon.
