In Belgorod, the water level has dropped due to an alleged attack by Ukrainian drones on the dam. Authorities have declared a state of emergency and are working to repair the damage.
Ukrainian drones damaged the dam of a waterworks in the Russian city of Belgorod near the border with Ukraine, Russian authorities announced on Monday. The water level in the reservoir dropped by about a meter, the Russian Water Management Authority said. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the DPA and TASS agencies.
The governor of the Belgorod region, Viačeslav Gladkov, called on residents living near the water reservoir to move to temporary accommodation facilities.
Dam damage
“Attacks on the dam of the Belgorod waterworks on October 24 and 25 damaged the drainage outlet, which is used to drain sanitary water under the waterworks, and also caused a leak in both segmental gates. As a result of the damage, the water level in the reservoir dropped by one meter. Based on the order of the operator, a state of emergency was declared in the facility and an action plan to carry out repairs was approved,” said the spokesman of the Russian Water Management Authority.
The commander of the units of unmanned systems of Ukraine, Robert Brovdi, confirmed the attacks on the dam on Sunday. He added that water from the water cannon flooded the Russian positions near the village of Grafovka.
According to the Ukrainian government and the resolution of the European Parliament, in the summer of 2023, Russian troops blew up the dam of the Kachovska water reservoir, which they occupied at the time, which caused a huge flood wave. It flooded large areas in the southern part of Ukraine. The incident claimed many lives. Russia claimed that Ukraine was behind the damage to the dam.
International humanitarian law prohibits attacks on dams or other structures whose damage could have devastating consequences – unless they are used for their normal purposes, but in support of military operations.
