Trump didn’t promise, but he guaranteed that there will be an agreement, says Lula

Petista states that “it will be faster than many people think”, but that it will depend on Brazil to follow through and demand negotiators

The president (PT) said during an interview with journalists this Monday (27.Oct.2025) that the North American leader (Republican Party) did not promise, but guaranteed that there will be an agreement regarding the 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, imposed in August.

Asked if Trump had made any promises to Brazil during the , Lula joked: “No, because I’m not someone for anyone to make a promise to me. They make a promise to a saint, not to me. For me, what he has to do is a commitment”.

Afterwards, Lula declared that, “although I didn’t make any promises”Trump guaranteed that there will be a deal. “And I think it will be faster than a lot of people think”he stated.

The president said that any relief in North American tariffs also depends on Brazil’s stance and charged the negotiators. “We are not a baby who has to wait for someone to call us. We are the ones who are interested. So, we have to go after it”he declared.

“I’ve already spoken to my negotiators. [Trump] He went to Korea, to Japan, but depending on the result this week, I’m going to bother him with a direct phone call. He also has my phone number. But, as I don’t use a cell phone, I give my ceremonial one, the [embaixador Fernando] Church. So, he calls the Church whenever he wants and we talk”these.

According to Lula, Trump “intends to make a high-quality agreement with Brazil” and the commitment that was made during the bilateral meeting “it’s very registered” by the 2 presidents. “I made a point of leaving President Trump in no doubt who I am, where I came from and what I think. Because only when we know each other can we start to respect people or not.”he declared.

In the interview with journalists, the Brazilian president took stock of his trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Lula participated in the (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Parallel to the summit, on Sunday (Oct 26), he met with Trump. A meeting between the two had been expected since what they had behind the scenes at the UN General Assembly (United Nations) in September.

In August, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports.

The meeting on Sunday (Oct 26) between Lula and Trump without the North American announcing the repeal of the 50% tariffs on Brazilian products. The Republican, however, agreed to discuss a review of fees.
