The American president called “inappropriate” the announcement made yesterday Sunday by his Russian counterpart regarding the successful final test of a new nuclear-powered cruise ship.
“It is inappropriate for Putin to say this. It should end the war in,” said the American president.
“This war, which was supposed to last a week, will soon enter its fourth year. That’s what he should be doing instead of testing missiles,” Trump said while speaking to reporters from the presidential jet that is taking him to Japan, the second stop on his Asian tour after Malaysia.
Asia tour
The Republican also reiterated that he “would love” to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Trump has not ruled out the possibility of extending, if necessary, his Asian tour, in which he will be in Japan today and tomorrow and in South Korea on Wednesday and Thursday.
Kremlin response
The Kremlin responded through its spokesman Dmitry Peskov that Russia will be guided by its own national interests and that there is nothing in the Burevestnik missile test that would worsen relations with Washington. As Peskov quoted to justify the missile test: “Russia must do everything to ensure its security amid the militaristic mood in Europe.”
Among other things, the representative of the Kremlin referred to the efforts made by Kirill Dimitriev and the informal contacts that Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for investments and economic cooperation has with the American government, arguing that: “Informal contacts in general are a very important element of the dialogue. This is just a small step on a long road.”
Finally, as Peskov announced – possibly in response to Trump’s statements that he would like to have a meeting with Kim Jong Un – the Russian president will meet with the foreign minister of North Korea in Moscow.
