A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook western Turkey on Monday evening, the disaster and emergency management agency AFAD said. Its hypocenter was located at a depth of almost six kilometers in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province. They did not immediately report any victims or material damage, TASR informs, according to an AFP report.
The earthquake struck at 22:48 local time (20:48 CET) northeast of Sindirgi. The US Geological Survey (USGS) immediately estimated its magnitude at 6.0 to 8.0.
The range of shocks
According to the Anadolu Agency, the tremors were felt in many areas on the coast of the Marmara and Aegean seas – also in the largest Turkish city Istanbul in the northwest or in Izmir, which is located in the west of the country.
Turkey is located on several fault lines, so earthquakes are quite frequent there. In August, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1, which also struck the city of Sindirgi, killed one person and injured dozens.
In February 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey – the deadliest in its modern history – killing more than 53,000 people. Hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 provinces were destroyed or damaged. Another 6,000 people lost their lives in the northern regions of neighboring Syria. Tens of thousands of people were injured.
