“Black bodies fit anywhere”: Cris Vianna talks about aesthetic standards at Carnival

During the rehearsal of Imperatriz Leopoldinense, in Rio de Janeiro, she starred in one of the most symbolic moments of the Rio Carnival when she passed the crown of Queen of Drums to the singer Iza. In an exclusive interview with reporter Katharine Alves, from LeoDias portalthe actress spoke about the importance of representation and reflected on the aesthetic demand in the world of samba.

“During the time I was drum queen, I understood that my body fit for that place. It fits! It always did”, stated Cris, firmly. “Black bodies can be at Carnival anywhere they want. Carnival was made by these people, so they can be wherever they want, however they want to be”, he added.

The actress highlighted that she never let herself be affected by imposed standards and that she always sought to live the festivities authentically. “I don’t go into that place of suffering. I go into the place of what I accept or don’t accept. And if I accept it, I’ll only be happy”, he declared. For her, the parade is above all a celebration of diversity and the joy of being who you are.

Cris was also moved when remembering his career at school and the affection of the Imperatriz community. “I’m very moved because I think the Imperatriz welcomed me like a São Paulo native, respecting me and bringing what samba I had to offer. I always felt welcomed”, she said.

With a sparkle in her eyes, the artist celebrated the new phase and the cycle that ends with Iza’s arrival on the drums. “Carnival is a place that everyone can enjoy. And that is what makes it so beautiful, a space of freedom, respect and belonging”, concluded Cris Vianna.
