The defense of former president Jair Bolsonaro presented this Monday an appeal against the conviction imposed by the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for attempted coup d’état and four other crimes, according to a document seen by Reuters.
In the 85-page document, the former president’s lawyers challenged the sentence of 27 years and 3 months in prison imposed by the court in September, with an initially closed compliance regime, calling it unfair.
Bolsonaro’s defense appeal should be analyzed by the First Panel in November, according to a STF source.

Bolsonaro was found guilty of the crimes of attempted coup d’état, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, armed criminal organization, qualified damage and deterioration of listed property.
Since the beginning of August, Bolsonaro has been under house arrest after he failed to comply with precautionary measures in another case, in the investigation he was responding to together with his son, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), for attempting to interfere in the STF trial by pressing for United States actions against STF ministers.
The former president was not charged in this case by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), but Eduardo Bolsonaro, who remains in the USA, was criminally accused by the PGR.
