Commentators Caio Coppolla and José Eduardo Cardozo discussed, this Monday (27), in The Great Debate (Monday to Friday, at 11pm), whether or not the meeting between Presidents Lula and Donald Trump weakens Bolsonarism.

After the meeting with the North American, he said that former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) “is part of the past of Brazilian politics”.

Coppolla assesses that the meeting between the two leaders was unproductive.

“Trump limited himself to congratulating Lula on his birthday, said they had a great meeting and made the following statement about the tariffs: ‘let’s see what happens. I don’t know if anything will happen, but let’s see’. Anything beyond that is nothing more than hearsay and rumors planted by the PT government in the fertile soil of the militant press,” he said.

“The truth is that Lula acted ideologically and irresponsibly, and it took him 10 months to make a simple call to the American president. Because of this, Brazil is exporting 20% less to the United States”, he argued.

Cardozo understands that Bolsonarism is weakened.

“Because Brazil doesn’t admit it, because Brazil doesn’t bow down, Jair Bolsonaro’s eventual salvation before the Judiciary has turned the page, that has become the past. Now we are discussing Brazil, its relationship with the United States, two countries that effectively know that they are sovereign countries”, he said.

“Of course, those forces that defend Jair Bolsonaro will try to say that everything is wrong, that Lula is guilty of everything, that he is guilty of suffering sanctions, it is Lula’s fault that he delayed the meeting, as if the United States had not closed the doors to negotiations”, he continued.
