Lula on Jorge Messias’ nomination to the STF: ‘Let me get to Brazil first’

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that he will only make his next appointment to the Federal Supreme Court when he returns to Brazil. Asked by Estadão whether he would nominate Minister Jorge Messias, from AGU, upon returning from his international trip, Lula discussed the moment, but not the name.

Government members take the president’s decision to choose Messias to replace Luís Roberto Barroso for granted.

“Let me get to Brazil first, let me get there,” he said this Tuesday morning, 28th, Malaysia local time.

The president left the Renaissance hotel, where he stayed in Kuala Lumpur, heading to the airport to fly back to Brazil. The presidential aircraft is expected to take off at around 8 am and make a technical stop in Johannesburg, South Africa, before heading to Brasília.

Jorge Messias is the most popular name for the vacancy. But his nomination was delayed after Lula met in Brasília with the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP). The senator defends another name for the vacancy: Rodrigo Pacheco, also a senator.
