US keeps nuclear submarine near Russia, says Trump

US President claims to keep vessel close to Russian territory, in response to missile test announced by Putin

The President of the United States, (Republican Party), stated this Monday (Oct 27, 2025) that he maintains a nuclear submarine close to Russian territory, according to information published by .

The speech was made in response to the (independent) president’s announcement about the successful test of the Burevestnik intercontinental missile, carried out on Sunday (Oct 26).

Putin announced that Russia has successfully tested the 9M730 Burevestnik cruise missile, capable of carrying nuclear warheads. According to Moscow, the weaponry can surpass any existing defense system and will be incorporated into the Armed Forces.

In audio released by the White House, Trump stated: “They know we have a nuclear submarine, the largest in the world, right off their coast, so there is no need to go 8,000 miles [12.800 km]”. The American president criticized the Russian stance and stated that Moscow should focus on ending the war in Ukraine.

Missile range

General Valery Gerasimov of the Russian Armed Forces said the Burevestnik covered 14,000 km in about 15 hours and “has not reached its limit range”. The missile surpasses the 5,500 km limit that characterizes a projectile as intercontinental and can reach any point in the United States.

Putin classified Burevestnik as a “invincible weapon” and justified its development as a response to the expansion of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the withdrawal of the United States from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2001.

Reactions and context

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia “is guided by its own national interests”. Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and Putin ally, said that the United States “they entered the path of war once and for all”.

The escalation of tensions between the 2 countries grew last week, after Trump imposed new economic sanctions on Russia. The conflict in Ukraine will complete 4 years in February 2026 and remains unresolved.
